Wine

A fine bouquet

Introduced to fine wines when he entered the magical household of Cécile de Rothschild in the 1960s (before that time, he had only been allowed wine on special occasions, when his mother diluted for him), Michel quickly learned the unique diversity of red, white and rosé wines, about the varied terroir, grape variety and vigneron.

Inspired by the greatest wines of Bordeaux, including Château Lafite, Mouton Rothschild and Château Yquem, he began to build up his own cellar, beginning with just a few cases, but now extending to a couple of thousand bottles!

Michel likes to look for wines for all occasions and all wallets because he believes everyone nowadays should be able to enjoy wine. For his restaurants, he prefers French wines as they fully complement his cooking. He happily acknowledges that there are wines from elsewhere that would be perfectly suitable, but justifies his preference by explaining that it is simply there is always a French wine to go with everything.

Since the early 1980s, Michel has relied on the unstinting help and support of Claude Grant, who has looked after the import of wine for Michel Roux Fine Wine Limited from the beginning. As a director, she is in charge of the day-to-day running of the company and works alongside Michel when he goes to taste his wines. Nowadays he and Claude taste wine for private clients usually en primeur and mainly in Bordeaux, often tasting over 100 wines during primeur week in April each year.

Michel also has an ancient vineyard on the St Tropez peninsula that he replanted with 2,200 Grenache vines. They are leased into the care of neighbours Jean-Etienne and François Matton, owners of Château Minuty, and produce an excellent rosé that he enjoys sharing with family and friends.

Have you ever considered creating your own wine cellar? Michel firmly believes that it is never too late to realise the dream of having several dozen bottles within reach and under your own roof. Please feel free to contact Claude, Company Director, by calling 0044 (0) 1628 786709 if you would like to learn more about a unique opportunity to buy direct from the Châteaux.
